Founded in 2004 by Eftihia Papageorgiou, who
immigrated to Chicago from Thessaloniki in 1991, the Chicago Hellenic
Choir is
a program of ODEION School of Music. The
choir serves as an educational and cultural resource for Hellenic
communities
in the Chicago metropolitan area by preserving, promoting, and
celebrating the
language, traditions, and religion of Greece through music.
The choir is comprised
of a junior group for
ages 5 to 8, a youth group for ages 9 through 18, and an adult group. Its members are exposed to and learn about the
rich language
and culture of Greece through the choir’s diverse
repertoire, which
includes selections by famous Greek composers and poets, lesser known
works,
and contemporary, traditional, and seasonal compositions.
The choir further
fulfills its mission of
preserving, promoting and celebrating Greek culture by performing at
numerous
venues throughout the year, including its annual Winter and Spring
concerts at
which the choir’s junior, youth, and adult groups perform individually
and
jointly. The choir also performs at
community events throughout the Chicago metropolitan area, such as the
Cultural
Events Series of Wright College and concerts at the Greek American
Rehabilitation and Nursing Centre. Performances are
announced via local media, including print, radio, and television.
In the summer of 2007,
the choir performed on tour with the Orpheus
Hellenic Folklore Society in Kalamata, Greece,
and other areas of Peloponneso, and
in February 2009 the choir will participate in the Greek Orthodox Folk Dance
& Choral Festival in Ontario, California.
